Understanding light needs for healthy plants

Light is one of the most important factors in plant health. Learn how to assess your space and match plants to the right light conditions.

Bright direct light means unobstructed sunlight hitting the plant for 6+ hours daily — think south-facing windows. Bright indirect light is strong ambient light without direct sun rays, ideal for most tropical houseplants. Medium light is found a few feet from a window or in east/west-facing rooms. Low light doesn't mean no light — it's the minimum for shade-tolerant plants like pothos or ZZ plants.
